To the surprise of no-one and the delight of many, Marvel has
confirmed the existence of a new Guardians of the Galaxy
animated series, following the incredible success of this summer's
movie outing for the once-obscure team.

Although rumoured for a while, and actually teased by Marvel
earlier this year at San Diego Comic Con, the official reveal was
made at this weekend's New York Comic Con. The trailer
-- which focusses heavily on Rocket Raccoon, being pursued by some
unknown enemy drone -- showcases a new direction for the studio's
animated offerings.

With heavier lines, minimalist designs, and a strong contrast
between light and shadow, it's very visually distinct from the
likes of Ultimate Spider-Man,
Avengers Assemble, and Hulk and the Agents of SMASH, Marvel's trio of
currently airing animated shows. However, the trailer was also said
to be test footage, so the final look of the series could shift
slightly before it debuts in 2015.

Steve Wacker, VP of Marvel Animation and former editor of the
comics, said the Guardians series will continue the blend
of action and comedy that viewers fell in love with from the film,
with Thanos appearing as one of the series' "big bads". While the
line up of the team will remain the same as the cinematic version
-- Star-Lord, Gamora, Drax, Groot, and Rocket Raccoon -- none of
the stars will be returning for the animated outing.

Marvel Animation has yet to announce the actual voice cast, but
the team has appeared in animation a few times in recent years, in
the three currently airing shows, where they were voiced by Chris
Cox as Star-Lord, Nika Futterman as Gamora, David Sobolov as Drax
and Kevin Michael Richardson as Groot. The consistency indicates
these actors to be front-runners for the ongoing. Rocket is harder
to predict, having been voiced by Billy West, Seth Green and Trevor
Devall in different episodes.

Given the weekly episodic format of the upcoming show, there's
scope to introduce some other members who have graced the comic
book roster too, at least in guest roles. It's an opportunity we
hope the new series gets to explore.

Guardians of the Galaxy will be broadcast on Disney XD
in the US, and it's a safe bet that the UK arm of the same channel
will snap it up for this side of the Atlantic.
