Worlds
collide in Secret Wars. Apparently quite literally, as this
patchwork map reveals.
Infographics improve everything, even fictional planets. On the
run up to its highly anticipated -- and highly mysterious --
Secret Wars event next year, Marvel has released a
breakdown of the Battleworld that will serve as arena for the
superpowered slugfest.
After months of lead-up teases, with covers remixing earlier
crossover events, Marvel finally revealed Secret Wars earlier this month.
The crossover is expected to be the culmination of writer
Jonathan Hickman's universe-smashing run on the
Avengers titles, and while key details
remain closely guarded, the new map does reveal more of what
readers can expect.
As with the original Secret
Wars from 1984, the upcoming event sees an entire planet
cobbled together for the assembled characters of the Marvel
Universe to cross swords on (and some wield actual swords, so
that's not just metaphor). Where the first Battleworld was an
amalgamation of alien worlds though, here it's created from
alternate versions of Earth.
It's getting into pretty deep comics lore to pore
through all 41 'countries' that seem to make up the planet, but
there are some clear highlights that readers will recognise,
hinting at the clashes to expect. The Domain of Apocalypse is
likely from the world of Age
of Apocalypse, likewise for the Monarchy of M coming from the
House of
M reality. New Mars
is likely a shout out to Killraven,
while K'un Lun and
2099 are already
established within the core Marvel Universe.
The map also raises a few questions though. How does Spider-Land
differ from Arachnia? Why is there a wall circling the entire south
pole, cutting off the nations of the Deadlands, Perfection, and New
Xandar? What are the three "classified" territories? And is
Greenland in the north a region dominated by Hulks, or just, you
know, Greenland?
Expect plenty more bits of fan-pleasing (and teasing) info to
come before the first issue of the main Secret Wars series
arrives in May, written by Jonathan Hickman with art by Esad Ribic.
Whichever way the matches pan out, we're just glad to see Howard the Duck continue to get his dues -- after all, part of
the new Battleworld is New Quack City.
