It's here, it's finally here! Sorry, that's our collective inner
child reacting to the debut of the teaser trailer for the hotly
anticipated Star
Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens.
It feels like an eternity since Lucasfilm stealthily announced the title of the first Star Wars
movie in a decade (it
was actually only three weeks), and the time since has been spent
pining for a glimpse of actual footage. Well, its finally
here, and it's definitely looking tantalising.
OK, you need to get past the first 12 seconds of sand, and an
ominous narration about an "awakening" but what follows impresses
that this entry, directed by JJ Abrams, is a
return to the style and tone of the classic trilogy, but given a
21st century upgrade.
It's hugely important that the first face we see is John Boyega's,
telling the audience that this isn't going to be the near-total
whitewash that the Universe has been criticised for in the past.
Almost as important is the question of why he's been abandoned on
what we presume to be Tatooine, in
Stormtrooper armour -- and that's only the first of many the
trailer asks.

Others incude: How cute is that speherical Astromech
droid? Where is the squadron of Troopers being deployed, and
why? Why is Daisy
Ridley's character so desperate to get away on a speeder (and
is she actually hotwiring it? It looks that way...)? Who is the
Darksider and how cool is his (her?) three-way, longsword-inspired
lightsaber? Is there any significance to the lack of the words
"Episode VII" anywhere in the trailer? Although we have to admit,
when John Williams' eternally rousing score kicks in and the
Millennium Falcon soars into flight against oncoming TIE Fighters,
we kind of stopped asking questions and felt like gleeful kids
again.
In short, it's a great first look, exciting audiences and making
them curious in equal measure. However, while we want to let
The Force Awakens into our hearts without reservation, we
were hurt once before -- a dark period beginning in 1999 when we
were menaced by phantoms. Hopefully, the finished product, due for
release next December, will let us love again.
