Marvel's second
Netflix series, Jessica Jones has found its leading lady,
with Krysten
Ritter
announced as the former superhero turned private
investigator.

Ritter is best known for her role as Jane Margolis on
Breaking Bad, and the lead role of Chloe in sitcom
Don't Trust the B---- in Apartment 23. The character of
Jessica Jones was created in 2001 by writer Brian Michael Bendis
and artist Michael Gaydos. Originally appearing in the mature
readers comic
Alias, she was the entry point to the darker side of the
Marvel Universe, before being brought into the mainstream comics
when Bendis took over the Avengers titles.

Jones was once the superhero known as Jewel, retconned into the
Marvel Universe by Bendis as having gained powers not long after
Spider-Man (even attending the same school in their civilian
identities) and going on to have a short and largely uneventful
costumed career. The exception was a truly disturbing encounter
with the villain Zebediah
Killgrave
, where she was trapped under his mental command for
eight months. Eventually freed after being used as a weapon against
the Avengers, she retired from crimefighting with the disheartening
realisation that no-one had noticed she'd been missing. Still
possessing her powers of strength, invulnerability and flight but
lacking the drive to use them, the Alias  series
followed her battle with depression and PTSD as she took on cases
that drew her reluctantly back into her old life.

Deadline reports that Ritter beat out four other contending
actors for the role, including Warm Bodies lead Teresa Palmer and Alexandra Daddario
from the Percy Jackson fantasy movie series. Ritter is
said to have sealed the deal thanks to chemistry with Mike Colter, himself
rumoured for the role of Luke Cage,
Jessica's eventual husband and set for a Netflix series of his
own.

The Netflix series,
set to launch on the streaming service after the Charlie Cox-starring Daredevil isn't the first time
Jessica Jones has been up for a TV series. Dexter writer
and executive producer Melissa Rosenberg
was developing an earlier take, AKA Jessica Jones for
American network ABC as far back as 2010, though it was eventually
passed over. Rosenberg will serve as executive producer and writer
on the Netflix series.

Jessica Jones is expected to launch on Netflix in 2015,
but no date has yet been announced.
