ends.

Superman is flying
back to the small screen -- sort of. The SyFy channel is developing
Krypton, an origin story for the Man of Steel's homeworld.
It's set to be in the vein of Batman spin-off Gotham,
revealing the events leading up to infant Kal-El being rocketed
from the doomed planet.

Krypton is set to follow Kal's grandfather -- depending
on the era of comics
being mined, either Jor-El I
or Seyg-El, the
latter named after Jerry Siegel,
one of Superman's creators -- as he tries to reshape Kryptonian
culture for the better. At this time, the House of El is said to be
outcast from society, rather than the esteemed standing they enjoy
in most versions of the Superman legend.

The series will be headed by David S Goyer, who
wrote director Christopher Nolan's Batman trilogy. Ian B. Goldberg,
most recently known from the fantasy series Once Upon a
Time
, is set to write the pilot's script. Both will serve as
executive producers.

Whether the series will adhere to the vision of Krypton seen in
director Zack Snyder's 2013 reboot of the iconic superhero, Man
of Steel
-- also written by Goyer -- is unknown. Flying
dragons and morphing computers may be beyond the budget of the
network that brought us Sharktopus, though.

Don't
miss

There are plenty of different takes on Krypton's culture to
potentially explore for the television series
though, from the retro-futuristic utopia favoured by DC's chief
creative officer Geoff Johns -- think Futurama, but dayglo
and with more headbands -- to the cold, emotionless, sterile
society created by John Byrne in 1986's comic reboot, The
Man of Steel
. Hopefully, the show runners will have
sense enough to avoid the worst parts of comics history, such as
having all the black Kryptonians living on an isolated
island
. Ouch.

There's no release window for Krypton yet, but
it's likely to be beaten to air by Superman's cousin Kara Zor-El --
aka Supergirl -- which is currently being developed for her own series.
