Yotaphone 2 with dual displays goes on sale for £555 http://goo.gl/UW5rog

Back
in February
Yota Devices unveiled the second version of its
two-faced smartphone. A lot has happened since then in the world of
phones -- Sony has released two new flagships in the in-between
period alone -- but finally the YotaPhone 2 is going on sale.

The phone will cost £555 in the UK and will be priced at around
700 euros in countries across Europe. If you want to get hold of
one you can pick one up online or in the first YotaPhone Store off
Brick Lane in Shoreditch, London.

We took another look at the phone to remind ourselves what it
looked and felt like both to hold and to use. The back of the
screen is curved and incredibly soft to the touch. It rests in the
hand like a smooth pebble. The touchscreen functionality on the
e-ink display is unfortunately not all that speedy and takes a
little while to respond and refresh.

It is useful to have the always-on option that allows you to
glance at notifications and the time at pretty much any moment (who
needs a smartwatch, eh?). Tapping it once allows you to make the
display private, in case you don't want onlookers to start peeking.
The e-ink screen also offers up to five days of ebook reading on a
single charge, making it very power efficient. YotaMirror
functionality means you can use any Android application on the
screen, including the likes of Spotify, WhatsApp and Kindle.

On the front is a decent 1080p AMOLED screen, for regular use,
and inside is a 2.2GHz quad-core Snapdragon processor. On the back
is a 8-megapixel camera, and it is accompanied by a 2-megapixel
snapper on the front. Given its high price point, we'll be keen to
see how the camera performs when we conduct our full review.

"We believe our technology constitutes an entirely new species
of mobile device, not just by integrating a power efficient
electronic paper display but by making two screens work in
harmony," said Yota CEO, Vlad Martynov in a statement at the
phone's official launch.

There's no doubt that the phone is much better executed than its
predecessor, but while it's quite a nifty piece of tech, it isn't
going to have an easy ride priced as it over the £500 mark. This
means it will be competing against high-end phones from established
players, and it's hard to establish just yet what kind of demand
there will be for such a unique device.

Initially the phone will be only be available in Europe and
Middle East, before heading to Hong Kong by the end of the month.
It is due to go on sale in China, Taiwan and other Asian markets
early next year, and will eventually be available in the
Americas.
