World of Tanks goes old school for New Year http://goo.gl/Jx1ckn

World of
Tanks
is ringing in 2015 by looking backwards, with a
new mode bringing an "8bit" overhaul to the online vehicle combat
game.

The upcoming Winter
Showdown
mode isn't really 8bit at all of course, but
it is definitely retro in its look. Taking cues from
Minecraft's distinctive aesthetic, the military themed
game has been redesigned into a colourful, blocky shooter. Matches
will take place in new arenas, with a seasonally appropriate
covering of ice and snow.

However, while the visuals are stepped down, the gameplay is
getting an upgrade. Winter Showdown brings in 'Mega Platoons',
increasing the number of players on a team from three to five, and
adds a 10 versus 10 random battle mode. A newly added weapon offers
shells that can heal allies as well as damage enemies, and players
will be able to shoot through the brick-based environments to
create new pathways in the field.

Don't
miss

It also introduces three new tanks, each with a designated role
on the battlefield. The Mammoth Heavy Tank is designed for
close-quarters manoeuvres; the Polar Bear Tank Destroyer
specialises in long-range sniping tactics; and the Arctic Fox Light
Tank is suited for speedy movement and scouting operations. There
will also be a new medal to earn -- the game's equivalent of
achievements -- for players who do well in the new mode, called
Operation Winter.

World of Tanks remains one of the most successful free-to-play online
games, with a reported
75m registered users, and a Guinness World Record for most players
online simultaneously. The new mode seems a fun way to attract
players who might not normally be interested in its usual realistic
approach to 20th century war machines.

Winter Showdown launches in the UK and Europe on 26
Jan.
