LaCie's new shiny portable drive Mirror will dazzle some, confuse others http://goo.gl/bZBBSE

LAS VEGAS -- If you're done grasping the shininess of the
Christofle Sphere
LaCie introduced last year, the storage vendor has something this year that might dazzle you, quite literally. Or maybe it's just confusing.

The new product is called Mirror, a portable drive encased in scratch-resistant Corning Gorilla Glass. Basically, if you look at it from any side, you'll see yourself, clear and true.

LaCie says this is a signature product designed in collaboration between the company and French designer Pauline Deltour. The idea is to show that in this day and age, the data we have is a reflection of who we are. And so, it just makes sense that when you look at the drive, you'll literally see yourself. Of course, this is just a metaphor since the drive reflects anybody who looks at it and not just the owner.

Speaking of data, the Mirror includes 1TB of storage space, which is average in terms of capacities when compared with other portable drives. It connects to a computer using a USB 3.0 connection (a standard cable is included) for both data and power. The drive works with both Windows and Mac computers.

Having a Mirror on your desk is a quick way to impose a statement.

I played with the Mirror briefly and found it intriguing to say the list. There's at least one shortcoming, however: similar to the case of the Sphere, the Mirror is a fingerprint super magnet. Clearly it's something for you to look at rather than touch with your bare hands.

But the main reason you might end up just looking is the price. LaCie says the drive will be available later this year with the expected price of $280, easily the most expensive 1TB portable drive on the market. (Pricing and availability for the UK and Australia have not yet been announced; directly converted pricing would be about £183 or AU$346.) Go ahead and get one if you want but before you do, try to imagine how this kind of investment reflects you.

And if you want to find out how it reflects me, check back later for the full review.
