Apple is giving a
helping hand to those who wish to avoid games with in-app purchases
by introducing a new "Pay Once and Play" section on its App Store.
The new section will showcase "great games with no in-app
purchases", which will require only a single payment upon download
for the full app experience. Among the selection are several
"blockbuster" games including Minecraft, Thomas Was Alone,
XCOM and the ever-endearing Goat Simulator. Those
looking for a more casual gaming experience might want to check out
App Store originals Threes and Kiwanuka.
The distinction the new category offers consumers is likely to
bring peace of mind to those who would prefer not to find
themselves at the mercy of the freemium gaming model.
Parents who have been stung by bills after discovering their dear
offspring have imprudently burned holes in their pockets, for
example. Or just those who find themselves drawn into the dark
place that is a Candy Crush addiction.
It was revealed only today that King, the studio that publishes
Candy Crush Saga, raked in £865m from players of the
sugary puzzler in 2014. Spending on the game fell in the last
quarter of the year, but as an example of how freemium can work in
the favour of publishers, there are few that can boast similar
levels of success.
The freemium model is widely accepted and understood these days,
but that didn't stop Apple having to change the "free" purchase
button next to free-to-download games with in-app purchases to
"get" last year. This was likely done in part due to a request by
the European Commission that saw both Apple and Google asked to
change the way they labelled apps in order to stop customers being
misled over games that are not actually free, but incorporate paid
components.
