Photo-based social network Instagram
now has more than 300 million monthly active users members --
putting it ahead of Twitter for the first
time. The Facebook-owned company is now
four years old and sees Instagrammers across the world share more
than 70 million photos and videos each day. In October Twitter
said it had 271 million monthly active users.
Given its growth, Instagram has recently changed how people find
the kind of content that they want to see. Last month it introduced
a "People" tab in order to make it easy to discover accounts they
might want to follow.
Instagram will soon introduce verified accounts for celebrities
and brands. Verification will come in the form of "badges", which
will start rolling out over the coming days.
The social network also announced plans to delete fake and
spammy accounts as part of a massive clean-up operation.
Users could see their follower
counts fall as a result of the changes, with Instagram sending a
notification to anyone affected.
"As more people join, keeping Instagram authentic is
critical -- it's a place where real people share real moments,"
wrote the company's CEO Kevin Synstrom in a blog post outlining new features.

It has been over two years now since Facebook acquired the
company and it has seen good growth, and only a few changes. While
Instagram took only four years to collect over 300 million firm
fans, it took Facebook over five years to hit that same landmark number back in 2009.
