UCL to open huge tech and engineering campus http://goo.gl/z8a6Nw

The new UCL East campus will focus on technology and engineering

UCL

University College London (UCL) is to build a
huge campus on the Olympic Park in a bid to inspire research in
technology and engineering. UCL East will cover some 11 acres and
provide 125,000m2 of space for staff and students.

The new campus will receive £141m in government
funding with the university contributing a further £270m. It will
sit to the south-east of the ArcelorMittal Orbit sculpture made
famous during the London 2012 Olympic Games.

The first phase of the site will open in 2018.
Covering 50,000m2 the university says it will forge "new
connections" between researchers and businesses while creating a
space for "radical innovation, new insights and new industries" in
the UK.

A new UCL Generator will include the
university's first school of design, with a new taught course
sitting alongside research and innovation. The UCL Museum of the
Future will include indoor and outdoor spaces with galleries,
collections libraries and studio and performance areas.

Elsewhere on the new site the UCL Centre for
Experimental Engineering will "address the acute skills shortage in
engineering" in the UK. The university says it will use established
and "experimental" techniques to teach engineering, prototyping and
manufacturing including large-scale fabrication. The centre will
also collaborate with industry.

A new UCL innovation centre will focus on
technology with a series of incubators, combining research with
technological development. The centre aims to work with businesses
of all sizes and focus on innovation and commercialisation in
biological devices, wearables and creating technology for urban
areas to "promote wellbeing".

UCL Living, a new living space for
undergraduates and postgraduate research students will also be
constructed.

"London can be the global capital for higher
education and we see this development -- alongside many others in
London -- as being an important step in that direction," said
professor Setphen Caddick, vice-provost of enterprise and London at
UCL.
