Update 8 p.m.: Analysts expected this edition of E3 to be all about games. If quantity was the measure, Sony’s PlayStation showcase hit it out of the park.
Sony showed off trailers and gameplay for titles across a wide range of genres, from adventure stories to high-end first-person shooters. From the old (reboots of Final Fantasy, Hitman), to the latest editions of blockbuster series (Uncharted, Assassin’s Creed, Call of Duty). The show also included previews of a few newcomers, including massive open-universe space explorer No Man’s Sky and The Last Guardian, an adventure and puzzle game that’s been in halting development for almost a decade.
The company also took a few minutes to describe its ambition for the PlayStation as a media hub — an angle Xbox executives were silent about on Monday. The company’s PlayStation Vue streaming TV service — which launches in Los Angeles and San Francisco on Monday — will soon let customers buy channels a-la carte instead of bundled subscriptions. Sony also touted its streaming music partnership with Spotify.
The Project Morpheus headset made a brief appearance in the form of clips of gameplay for the virtual reality device. Developers large and small, Sony said, are interested.
LOS ANGELES — Microsoft made its bid for the attention of console gamers Monday. Now it’s Sony’s turn to respond.
Microsoft opened the day before the kickoff of the E3 gaming trade show with a presentation heavy on exclusive Xbox games. The Redmond company also announced plans to make older Xbox 360 games run on the current Xbox One console.
The stakes are a bit different for Sony, which already boasts the best-selling video gaming console in the PlayStation 4. Still, the company is likely to share details on a flurry of its own coming games, including Uncharted 4. Don’t be surprised to hear more about Sony’s Project Morpheus virtual reality headset, too.
